DeviantArt Inspiration Part III

I missed last Thursday’s Deviantart Inspiration post because I was on the road, but I’m back with ten more of my favorite pieces of art and/or photography from the always wonderful DeviantArt. I can’t help it – I have a lot of images I want to share. Enjoy!

10 Geeky Birthday Cakes!

Today is my birthday! So far I’ve spent it sleeping in, getting a breakfast of biscuits and bacon cooked for me, and lounging on the couch watching TV. For lunch, Ash bought me Chinese food and we might end the day with a night watching movies. A quiet, but wonderful birthday.

No cake though. I’ll get that next Monday when we celebrate with my family. I love cake and I think it’s one of the perfect ways to celebrate any occasion. In honor of my birthday, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite geeky birthday cakes online and felt I should share them with you. Of course, now all I want to eat is cake.

Something To Remember.

Celestial
Celestial by Andy Mumford

One summer night, out on a flat headland, all but surrounded by the waters of the bay, the horizons were remote and distant rims on the edge of space. Millions of stars blazed in darkness, and on the far shore a few lights burned in cottages. Otherwise there was no reminder of human life. My companion and I were alone with the stars: the misty river of the Milky Way flowing across the sky, the patterns of the constellations standing out bright and clear, a blazing planet low on the horizon. It occurred to me that if this were a sight that could be seen only once in a century, this little headland would be thronged with spectators. But it can be see many scores of nights in any year, and so the lights burned in the cottages and the inhabitants probably gave not a thought to the beauty overhead; and because they could see it almost any night, perhaps they never will. ~Rachel Carson

More Inspiring Deviantart Pictures

It is Thursday and I shall carry on the tradition of showcasing some of my favorite images from DeviantArt. As before, these are photographs and illustrations that I find inspiration in, be it the color scheme, the topic of the image, or just some small feeling I get inside from looking at it. I hope you like them as much as I do.

Our little cat. I think.

Merlin, our 11 month old kitten, who happens to look more like a five year old cat than a baby and acts more like a dog than a kitten, is probably the most destructive animal you will ever meet. But when he’s sleeping, well he’s just darn cute. And photogenic.

While he tends to act like a dog, he sits like a person. Yeah, we have a cat with an identity problem. But still. He’s just darn cute.

Time Management for Freelancers

I am the first to tell you that when it comes to time management, I fail. Hard. I have never been able to manage my time wisely. I am an avid procrastinator (on homework and my own projects – great clients motivate me enough to get their designs done) and, what with Spring bringing lots of sunny weather, I find it hard to sit at my computer and focus on the screen. But with the coming of Summer and the economy on the rise again, I find myself with more and more projects to take care of. This means that I am at my computer more and more even on the sunniest days (much to the disappointment of my girlfriend – I miss you, baby!) so when I do go outside into the sun, my skin begins to melt off and the paleness of my skin blinds those within a three mile radius. Trust me, it’s not a pretty sight.

But persist I must, and therefore, I have come up with several tips to help myself focus on getting stuff done (giving me more free time to go outside and remind my family every once in awhile that I love them).

Top 10 Handwritten Fonts

I love handwritten fonts. I just feel there is something more personal to them, especially when used in in the right design. You not only get the personal touch of having something to complete the “hand-made” look of a design, but you also get a font that usually was created with the same idea – it’s hand-made! Over the years, I have created quite a large stash of some of my favorites, and I feel compelled to share them with you. It was tough narrowing them down to ten, but I did it.

Happy Mother’s Day.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Today is the day to honor moms everywhere (or, on this particular day, in the states at least).  And let me just tell you, I have the greatest mother ever.  Not only has she put up with my crap for twenty-three years, but she she put up with the crap of my middle sister for sixteen years, and the ever-growing crap of my youngest sister for eight and a half years.  She has her hands full.

You’re my hero, Mom.  I love you.  Thank you for everything.

Love,
Your (favorite) daughter,
Me.

Design Music!Inspiration

Designing. Music. The two go hand in hand. No, I’m serious. If I want to do any sort of work at all, be it designing or coding or sketching out ideas, I have to have music. For awhile it was Tamaki Nami and Koda Kumi and anything JPop; cute asian girls who can belt out perky songs while dancing like crazy really helps my motivation. Then I went through an 80s phase where Journey was at the top of my playlist, closely followed by a step forward into some crazy hip hop that I almost never listen to. I don’t know, I guess I needed a good beat.

Now? Now I’m listening to the Innocent Mission and Kate Rusby and basically any female folk singer. My music tastes are far and wide, and Pandora Radio has been my best friend lately. It has broaden my horizons, so to say.

This led me to thinking though. What do other designers listen to? This in turn led to, What would a compilation of designers’ playlists sound like? So I have proposition for all you designers out there: Design Music!Inspiration.

Design Music!Inspiration

This is a project open to any designer. Comment on this post and I will send you a short list of interview questions that have to do with your musical tastes. I will then ask you to choose one song that sums up all the music that you find design inspiration in. In a week or two (depending on how many responses I get), I’ll put it all together in a post that will contain each interview as well as a playlist of the ultimate Design Inspiration.

Ready to begin? Then let’s go! Comment and let me know if you want in on this great great project; this Design Music!Inspiration!

Preview and Possible Contest News

While working on a new WP theme for a client, I made a mock-up of a very fun and colorful theme. After going through it, we decided to scrap it and start with something else. However, I didn’t just want to throw the theme away considering someone else might like it, so I’m going to be adding it to my Design Coyote Premade Shop.

Here’s a preview:

Colorful Crayons Preview

Let me know if you’re interested. I’ll be putting it up soon, and if I get enough interest, I might run a small contest for someone to win this theme for free! That’s right – FREE. More information will be blogged about this later.

Also, anyone else feeling absolutely lost with Twitter down today? What do I do with my life when I can’t tweet about it?
