Artist Showcase: Jason Chan

Sometimes, while I’m working, I take breaks to make a cup of tea and wander through art sites such as DeviantArt.com or ConceptArt.org. Usually I’ll go through them fast, just to see if anything catches my eye, and if something does, I’ll save it so I have something pretty to look at later. Every once in awhile though, I’ll see something that makes my jaw drop and my eyes sparkle.

Today’s post is brought to you by illustrator Jason Chan. While all of his art is absolutely gorgeous, I was completely taken by one piece in particular, which is now showcased on my laptop’s desktop. The file name, Waterfall, really does no justice to it, and yet, at the same time brings out the beautiful simplicity of the painting.

Personally, it evokes in me the same feelings I get when watching the timeless works of Hayao Miyazaki – most especially Laputa: Castle in the Sky, with it’s ancient robotic men and innocent little girl. Jason Chan has caught a simple moment with his digital canvas – a friendship between an unlikely pair in one of the most beautifully rendered backdrops I’ve ever seen.
