Thanksgiving Not-A-Turkey Bird!

I’m almost entirely caught up with NanoMangO, but posting them will have to wait until we get back home to Texas and my scanner. Currently, Ash and I (along with the two dogs and two of our rats who need medication) are in Tennessee spending the Thanskgiving holiday with Ash’s mom’s side of the family. It’s been a really nice time, I surprised her grandparents (her Gramma literally screamed when she saw me she was so excited), and I got some design work done while I was here.

Anyway, I was finishing up some of the things that I had left in my WIP folder and I thought I’d share this little bird that I had created as a mock-up for a client. She ended up going with a different version I drafted, but I still like it so I figured why not post it.

I failed (sort of) at NaBloPoMo, but I’ll make up for it when I go and back-date my comics to the right dates. It’ll look like I won… Hey, that works right? In any case, enjoy the bird. I’ll be back in Texas on Sunday.

Muppets Do Queen: Bohemian Style

Because if you know me, you’ll know I love all things Jim Henson. And Queen. And that’s really all you need to know to continue with this post..

Have to finish up some comics. I’ll do that this week. Ash and I and the pups are driving to Tennessee tonight (and the better part of tomorrow I suspect). It’s a 16 hour straight shot, let’s see if we can do it. Have a great Thanksgiving to all those who celebrate it (and have a great weekend to everyone else).

Tonight I Walked With Dinosaurs

Tonight, I experienced the most amazing, most awe-inspiring, most beautiful journey I have ever had. Tonight, I walked with REAL, LIFE-SIZED DINOSAURS and spent it all with my most wonderful girlfriend who made it possible. I cannot begin to describe to you the fullfillment of one of my longest-held dreams. If you ever get a chance, go see Walking with Dinosaurs. It is the best experience, hands-down that I have EVER had in my entire life. It is something I will never ever forget.

I’m going to try and post some videos I took later tonight, but for now, have a picture (from the website – my pictures are all dark since they were taken with my camera):

Walking With Dinosaurs

You will be astounded and humbled by these beautiful giants that have come to life. I felt like I was living in James Gurney’s Dinotopia. My favorite part? The moment the Brachiosaurus walked out. My mouth dropped open, my heart felt like it was too big for my chest, and tears welled in my eyes. A 40 foot dinosaur stood above my head and blinked at me. Tonight, I had a dream come true.

Mika and Hope for Abandoned Cats

Instead of a comic, you get a picture of a cute kitten. Why? Because I’m exhausted, had a bit too much to drink at dinner, and I need SLEEP. That and I’m lazy. But whatever. You’ll get three comics tomorrow (not that I’m promising anything, I’m just saying you might, if I’m productive – which, chances are, are kind of slim knowing me, but still – maybe, that’s all I’m saying) maybe. We’ll see. Anyway…

Mika the Kitten

This is Mika, just one of the many cats we trapped this year with the Central Texas Feline Rescue. Every Tuesday night, Ash and I spend the evening with a bunch of traps, some tuna fish, and our quick wits in an attempt to catch feral/abandoned cats to get them spayed/neutered and rabies-tested. Our goal this year was 300 – we hit 304. While Ash and I have only been doing this for several months (since we moved down here), we’re incredibly proud of ourselves for helping the cat community of Austin and the surrounding towns.

Mika here was a cat we caught last week. Last night we caught her again… twice. She was hungry enough that she didn’t even care how many times she got caught in that trap. Because of that, the volunteers took her in and our fearless leader Elizabeth is going to get her the rest of her shots and then we’ll be taking her in for a short time until we can find a more permanent home (be that a longer-term foster home or a forever home) for her. She’s beautiful and small and we couldn’t leave her out there in the cold so home she comes. We’ll see how she does.

Working with these cats is hard. They have hard lives and many times their stories are heartbreaking. The last few weeks, we’ve been trapping a colony of cats that came from a 14-cat household. The owners moved and abandoned all 14 cats to the streets, and now the owner of the park they currently call home is threatening to come in and kill them all. We spent the better part of last night canvasing that particular neighborhood, handing out literature on TNR and our group, and letting people know exactly what was going on. I was so wonderfully surprised by the reaction we got from people. More than one person praised what we were doing, thanked us for our time, and blessed us with hope in their eyes.

There is hope in the world. For Mika, there is hope tonight. She’s off the streets. Someday, we’ll get them all. There is hope.

Geekery at its Best (and Hottest)!

I’m one of those rare species referred to as a “Girl Gamer” (though, seriously, I honestly don’t think we’re so rare – I know A LOT of girl gamers and to think that we’re a minority is kind of insulting). My drug game of choice? World of Warcraft. Both Ash and I have been out of commission for the past year I think for lack of funds, but in the coming weeks we’ll be starting up our characters again (the sole reason of my getting an office job is to pay for my addictions, you see). I hesitate to give our out names and server because it is more likely we’ll be switching soon and starting anew since it’s been so long (though I’m not sure I want to give up my Glenwyn Belf quite yet). In any case, I’ll keep you informed (because you care).

The other reason for this post. This:

Because there’s always that slim chance that someone has not seen it, I thought I’d post it (again? I think? I’m pretty sure I already posted this when it first came out but I can’t find the original entry).

Come on. Felicia Day? In character? Hot. (Also, be sure to check out The Guild. Funny stuff.)

NanoMangO Day 16

You know, according to these comics, we yell at our kids a lot. We don’t. I assure you. We love them all very much. It just happens that we have a lot of very frustrating moments that we laugh at afterward. And you get the product of that laughter: a comic!

The Family Menagerie - Eraser Thief

This happens a lot. If it’s not one cat, it’s another.

NanoMangO Day 15 and CatchUp

Because our week was so hectic with Morgan, work, and a few days of chaos (and Wii Fit Plus), I didn’t get a chance to catch up on NanoMangO until tonight. I churned out six comics pretty much in one sitting, which gives me a whole lot of hope, not only for the rest of the month, but also for future comics. They’re pretty sketchy, but the ideas are there. I’ve backdated them to the days they are supposed to be on (cheater) so I’ll give you a run down right now on how far we’re at (half-way, baby!).  First though, today’s comic:

The Family Menagerie - Meet the Pups

Simple because I’m boring like that (no, not really – I just thought it was cute). Here’s the count as it stands:

01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 10 11 12 13 14 15

Until tomorrow! Ah Monday, you come too soon.

NanoMangO Day Fourteen

I kid you not, this is a true story. Akima is our Princess. She’s dainty, and hates to get litter between her toes (seriously, when we force her into the box, she spends a good twenty minutes scraping her paws on the side of the litter box trying to get it off). So what does she do? She goes next to the litter box and then attempts to hide the evidence.

The Family Menagerie - Pooper Scooper

While I admire the thought she puts into it, I don’t think she quite understands the concept of a panty liner.

NanoMango Day Thirteen

Okay, so I understand boxes. Boxes are cool. I’d hide in a box. In face, freshman year of college I had a TV box in my dorm room that I hid in occasionally. No joke. I had a light in there and I’d read. Don’t ask. I don’t know why I didn’t have that many friends back then. I always invited them to sit in my box but all I got were weird looks.

The Family Menagerie - Cat-In-A-Box

Boxes are cool. But the garbage? Satsuki is a smelly cat. Zane on the other hand always smells clean.

Life Tastes Like Coffee.

Happy CoffeeYou ever notice how some days you just wake up, and you KNOW it’s going to be a good day? Something inside is just happy to be awake even at six in the morning? Where even those cranky morning commuters can’t get you down? A day when you’re excited to be alive and every moment has so much potential that you feel you’ll go crazy if you can’t do everything at once?

Maybe it’s just the coffee talking. At any rate, I think both me and my coffee are having a day like that. I’m looking forward to this weekend because I have so much I want to do! I have freelance projects I want to finish/start, I have my office to finish cleaning, I have paintings I want to start. Ash and I recently bought Wii Fit Plus and I want to start that up. We’re also volunteering tomorrow to help with the CTFR cattery at PetSmart. I want to go to the park tomorrow night and walk the dogs since we haven’t had time to do that lately. So much to do! There really isn’t enough time in the day.

And of course, I have to work on my comic. I’m three days behind but I’m going to attempt to catch up tonight. Got a couple of ideas, so hopefully I can draw them up. I’ve also still got several blog posts I should finish, and a blog series I want to start (any illustrators interested in being interviewed? Contact me).

Let’s see just how much I can get done this weekend. Let’s do this!
