The Beauty of Design

Design

“Design in art, is a recognition of the relation between various things, various elements in the creative flux. You can’t invent a design. You recognize it, in the fourth dimension. That is, with your blood and your bones, as well as with your eyes.” -D. H. Lawrence

Business Card Redesign!

Recently I became one of the winners of a contest over at Pro Blog Design and found myself with the opportunity to print 1000 free business cards from All Business Cards. Of course I’m absolutely ecstatic about this and have decided that a complete revamp of my business card is in order. I had the main idea down – I wanted it to be simple with a blue color scheme to match most of my personal designs (I have a thing for blue it seems). Anyway, I came up with a couple of different versions until I settled on one that I felt drawn to. But before I go ahead and order 1000 of these little cards, I thought I’d get some feed back from you, my readers and fellow designers.

So what do you think? The old card will be pretty much useless soon since we’ll be moving and the address will be out of date. I also made it before Design Coyote had been created which is now my main design site (which is in dire need of a rehaul/update). I feel that the new card reflects a positive change in my design, a simple, more clean cut look.

Feedback is very much welcome! Let me know what you think!

Artist Showcase: Jason Chan

Sometimes, while I’m working, I take breaks to make a cup of tea and wander through art sites such as DeviantArt.com or ConceptArt.org. Usually I’ll go through them fast, just to see if anything catches my eye, and if something does, I’ll save it so I have something pretty to look at later. Every once in awhile though, I’ll see something that makes my jaw drop and my eyes sparkle.

Today’s post is brought to you by illustrator Jason Chan. While all of his art is absolutely gorgeous, I was completely taken by one piece in particular, which is now showcased on my laptop’s desktop. The file name, Waterfall, really does no justice to it, and yet, at the same time brings out the beautiful simplicity of the painting.

Waterfall

Personally, it evokes in me the same feelings I get when watching the timeless works of Hayao Miyazaki – most especially Laputa: Castle in the Sky, with it’s ancient robotic men and innocent little girl. Jason Chan has caught a simple moment with his digital canvas – a friendship between an unlikely pair in one of the most beautifully rendered backdrops I’ve ever seen.

You can find more about Jason Chan on his website JasonChanArt.com.
