The Family Menagerie!

Our little cat. I think.

Merlin, our 11 month old kitten, who happens to look more like a five year old cat than a baby and acts more like a dog than a kitten, is probably the most destructive animal you will ever meet. But when he’s sleeping, well he’s just darn cute. And photogenic.

Merlin in the Chair

While he tends to act like a dog, he sits like a person. Yeah, we have a cat with an identity problem. But still. He’s just darn cute.

When he’s sleeping.

We keep it real, Old School.

I don’t know where the title came from. I think someone said it on TV. Anyway.

“To this day, there are those who insist the Holocaust never happened – who perpetrate every form of intolerance — racism, antisemitism, homophobia, xenophobia, sexism, and more — hatred that degrades its victim and diminishes us all. Today, and every day we have an opportunity, as well as an obligation to confront these scourges.”

Just thought I’d share that little quote from President Obama. You can read the whole article here: At Capitol, Obama Reflects on Lessons of Holocaust. I think this is a good reflection time – to see what hatred can do. There are hate groups everywhere that need to just open their eyes and learn from the past.

In other news, Ash and I have officially opened our new Rescue Animals blog and information site: I Love Rescue Animals. Our twitter (@RescueAnimals) has grown from 0 to 300 followers in three weeks (we got 55+ followers just today) and it’s already starting to get bigger than we really imagined. I’m happy – we’re actually doing something great! I say “we,” but really, it was all Ash who started it and does all the twittering and reading of articles. I’m just kind of here to look pretty.

Still in Austin, still doing some web stuff, still job hunting. Same old, same old.

Pets and Earth Hour.

My internet connection is being ungodly slow today. Huh.

Why don’t people spay and neuter their pets? Okay, I understand if your dog gets pregnant once and you get them spayed, but when your dog accidentally gets pregnant not once, not twice, but three times and you don’t do anything about it, there’s something wrong. Usually I leave the animal talk up to Ash, but she was looking up animal places in Austin and we got started on the subject. I also get annoyed by the amount of breeders that are on Craigslist, pretending that they’re just good citizens trying to give people puppies. We know you’re breeders, stop selling on Craigslist. A top breeder wouldn’t have to fall to a poorly-designed online advertisement site to get rid of their animals.

It’s Sunday and I have nothing that fulfilling to blog about. I have several design projects lined up starting tomorrow so it’ll be a nice, busy week with a bit of income, so I’m happy.

Also, yesterday’s Earth Hour was a tremendous success despite the people who attempted to counteract the good we were trying to do in the world. More than 3929 cities, towns and municipalities in 88 countries across 25 time zones joined in and voted Earth by turning off their lights. The pictures that continue to be added to the Official FlickR Group have been amazing – from Hong Kong in darkness to the lights of Big Ben and the House of Parliament shut off. It’s just astounding. I’m still waiting on more articles with statistics though. And some pictures of the US.

Spring should be here by now, and yet it’s 40 degrees and rainy. I think that means it’s a good day to play video games and just wait it out. Yes.

Respect for Mother Earth.

Earth Hour is almost upon us here in the US. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, read my previous post. There are quite a few people out there who aren’t going to acknowledge this event and will instead be celebrating what they call “Human Achievement Hour.” To them, I say this:

I would think that’s awesome and all because we should celebrate the good that’s in the world and all that we’ve managed to do, but our carbon footprint is much bigger than our foot. This isn’t just about global climate change, whether you believe in it or not. It’s about conservation and preservation. It’s about taking one night out of how many nights and saving Mother Earth a little energy. It’s about shutting down our preconceived notions that we own the planet and looking up at a sky with little light pollution to stop us from seeing the stars. It is about celebration – celebration of what people can do if we all just get together. Already, millions of people around the world have banned together to do something amazing. Whether you think it doesn’t serve enough of a cause or whether you think it’s all just a bunch of lies doesn’t matter. It’s the fact that people are trying to do good for the world.

Ultimately, it’s about paying our respects for Mother Earth. And that’s what I’m celebrating and acknowledging when I turn my lights off in three hours. That’s what I believe.

It looks like it’s going to storm here. I’m going to turn off the lights and enjoy the rain and the wind and the night. Yes. Vote Earth.
