cult of librarians, oh my!

If you keep up with Neil Gaiman’s blog, feel free to pass this by since it comes from this entry.

I pretty much grew up in the Aram Public Library back home. I was on the Teen Advisory Board (TAB) for it for a year and a half before I graduated it (I was there when they first began it), and when I got to college, I worked for another year and a half as a Desk Clerk/All-Around-Errand-Runner-and-Website-Updater at the library on campus. So libraries are pretty important to me overall.

And even though I’ve been around libraries for so long, and have seen a lot of interesting drama happen with them, the letter Neil Gaiman posted still surprised me.

“I walked out of our main branch one day to find several van loads of people carrying picket signs and descending on our building. There were many children with the group and some of them were given picket signs and sent out to rally cars driving by to “Honk if you hate Library Porn” and “Unsafe for Kids”. The other picketing parents sent their kids into our children’s department for us to baby-sit for the next several hours – while they tried to rally community support against us. (The irony was not lost on us.)”

I think some people should be dragged out into the street and beat with a stupidity stick until they realize that libraries are places of higher learning – therefore they should be used to learn when you’re being a complete moron about a subject. I don’t understand how they though that the library was offering porn to children. Ridiculous.

Anyway, there you have it. Stupidity at its finest.

Video Games Live & Warcraft!

So I’m listening to WoWcast and they were talking about this and I would give anything to see it live. Check out the trailer for it. It is amazing.

Video Games Live.

I would give anything to go. Their website says they’re coming back to Chicago, but there’s no date for it. What I wouldn’t give for that show… Blows me away, you know? A concert of gaming music. Wow. (Or WoW).

That’s not really Warcraft news but it was mentioned so there.

Update 1.5.2013: Took me six years, but I finally FINALLY got to see Video Games Live here in Austin, TX tonight AND IT WAS AMAZING! Just as great as I thought it would be (and even better).

Make College Affordable.

IMPORTANT!

Today is January 11, 2007. Those of you who have been keeping up with the new Democratic congress and their first 100 hour priorities should know what today is.

Today is National Make College Affordable Day. Today, read here for more information, a national coalition has gone to DC to make sure Congress “makes good on their promise.”

This is a huge step for college students and for future college students. There may yet be a day where we won’t be under the poverty line when we graduate.

I’m crossing my fingers.

Resolutions, Webdesign & Things

I was talking to T today about New Year’s resolutions and I decided that I need something a little different from my usual “I won’t procrastinate” motto that I try to stick to and then put in the closet to do later. So, after reading the latest issue of A List Apart, I’ve decided that my New Year’s resolutions are going to be more along the lines of technology-related. Here’s a list I’ve come up with:

– Move Amadaun.net to a new host that is WordPress-friendly.
– Move my Coyote Dreams blog from Dan’s site to the new A.net.
– Redesign and recode A.net/blog with Web Standards being the first thing of mind.
– Revamp and add content to A.net that brings in a variety of different readers.
– Have readers: This means actually writing content in the blog worth reading about!

Other resolutions that are slowly filtering into my mindset are anywhere from the lines of hit lvl 60 on both my warlock gnome and my tauren druid before the year is out, start drawing more – not just painting, writing stories for both my Atlantis series and my new Stories from the Paradise People series, getting something published even if it’s just in a magazine, working out more (yeah, right), and get an Outdoor Education internship as well as an English internship. I’m also trying to tell myself not to be so literal, stubborn, hypocritical, and hard to deal with, if not for my sake, but for T’s. She does it now (though I still don’t know how), but she puts up with me. I want to try to work on it though since the ringing in of 2007 means that this is the year I’ll be moving in with her (not for another 6 months but oh well).

This year, I think the biggest resolution I’m setting for myself is to be harder on myself, goal-wise. I need to motivate myself and stay with it (which I suppose will go hand in hand with not procrastinating so much).

Of course, I’m also going to try not to be so sick and catch every bacteria and virus in the line of touch. But I’ve already seemed to lost that battle being sick and still running a fever and throwing up. Wonderful isn’t it?

Come on 2007! Bring it on! I’ll sneeze on you and bring you down with me. This is going to be a good year.

Now, if you’ll excuse me. I’m going to go pass out since I’m still feeling really groggy and ill.
